This scent-free guesthouse in Durham, North Carolina is a new-construction (2022) farmhouse-style cottage located in the Tuscaloosa-Lakewood neighborhood, about three minutes from Duke University and 15 minutes from UNC. It accommodates up to three guests with one queen bed, a sofa bed, and one full bathroom with a shower over a tub.

The hosts have designed the space explicitly for chemically sensitive guests, noting that the host herself has autoimmune chemical sensitivity. The cottage is not treated with synthetic fragrances or strong chemicals, and all cleaning products used are natural and non-toxic, including alcohol and vinegar as disinfectants. Scented products of any kind, including perfumes, room sprays, and synthetically scented body care products, are not permitted. The mattress is described as high-quality, natural, and non-toxic. Organic shampoo, conditioner, body soap, hand soap, and dish soap are provided at no charge for guests who wish to use them.

 

The cottage features blackout blinds, a kitchenette with a toaster, microwave, and mini fridge, a dedicated workspace, Wi-Fi, and a smart TV with multiple streaming services. The neighborhood is walkable to a coffee shop, several restaurants, and a Food Lion, with the Durham Co-Op Market a short drive away.
